  • The different strawberry plants on sale available( organic strawberry plants for sale, sweet charlie strawberry plants for sale, everbearing strawberry plants for sale, alpine strawberry plants for sale and many others)
  • Strawberry plant care so you get the most fruit out of your strawberry patch

3 Types of Strawberry Plants

Garden supply stores offer3 main varieties of strawberry plants for sale to the home gardener:

  1. June Bearing
  2. Everbearing
  3. Day Neutral

Each type has its advantages and disadvantages and is best suited for different conditions.

1.JUNE BEARING STRAWBERRY PLANTS

If you prefer one large crop of  strawberries, then you want to buy June Bearing strawberry plants. Commercial farmers like them too because they produce the largest yield per season compared to the other types and they harvest just once.

This variety produces a single crop in spring or June (hence the name) and has the largest berries of all the varieties. The plant bears its fruit for about 2-3 weeks at most so you will need to be prepared to harvest at this time.

June Bearing plants come in various classes: Early, Mid-season and Late, depending on the specific time when they will bear fruit in the spring season.

June bearing plants produce lots of runners/daughters so they are best if you have lots of space in your garden so the runners can run free. Runners are like off-shots from the plant, commonly known as “daughters” because they can become a separate plant in themselves.

If your local area has frosty conditions, you need to take special care as frost can destroy June Bearing plants

KEY POINTS ABOUT JUNE BEARING PLANTS

  • One large crop
  • Big strawberries
  • Need space
  • Sensitive to frost

2. EVERBEARING STRAWBERRY PLANTS FOR SALE

If you want to get more than one crop of strawberries, then you should buy the everbearing strawberry plant.

You will get 2-3 harvests from the everbearing plants – in June, in the late summer or in the early fall.

You will harvest smaller strawberries but the plant is more manageable because it doesn’t produce many runners.

If you have limited space to plant your strawberries like in a strawberry pot , then the everbearing plant is a good choice.

Because of the two to three harvest seasons, the everbearing’s strawberry production is dependent on the number of daylight hours in your location.

KEY POINTS ABOUT EVERBEARING PLANTS

  • 2-3 Harvests
  • Smaller strawberries
  • Ideal for small spaces
  • Sensitive to daylight hours

Strawberry, Tristan Strawberry, TristanPick Breakfast on Your Patio This new everbearing strawberry from Holland produces lots of beautiful deep rose flowers and an abundant harvest of sweet fruit all summer. The runnerless plants are perfect for pots or smaller gardens. So, you can step out onto your patio or porch each morning and easily pick breakfast. Tristan grows 12” tall and has a 20-25” spread.

3. DAY NEUTRAL STRAWBERRY PLANTS

If you want to harvest strawberries all summer long, then day neutrals are perfect for this.

They can produce fruit throughout the growing season, so if you have a green thumb and the patience, this plant is ideal.

Just like the Everbearings, the day neutrals produce a smaller fruit and because they don’t generate a lot of runners/daughters, they are great if you don’t have a lot of space.

A great feature of the day neutrals is that their strawberry production isn’t dependent on daylight hours so you can harvest all summer long.

KEY FEATURES ABOUT DAY NEUTRAL PLANTS

  • Multiple Harvests
  • Smaller strawberries
  • Ideal for small spaces
  • Not dependent on daylight hours

Alpine Strawberry Plants for Sale

Alpine Strawberry Plants produce the original wild strawberry, known as the alpine strawberry fruit. Before science and technology created large, mass-produced modern strawberry varieties, the alpine strawberries were growing for centuries in the wild in just about every continent.

Alpine strawberries are also known as fraises des bois and the woodland strawberry while their scientific name is Fragaria vesca.

Alpine strawberries are special and different from other types of strawberries for a few reasons.

  • First of all, they are incredibly delicious and have an intense ‘wild strawberry’ flavor, plus a fragrant aroma so if you really prefer gourmet flavor over anything else, then alpines are for you.
  •  Secondly, they are smaller in size than regular strawberries and have a more elongated shape.
  • Thirdly, they come in a number of colors apart from the normal red color. You can get white alpine strawberries and yellow alpine strawberries from the alpine strawberry yellow wonder plant

The alpine strawberry plant produces small and tasty berries from June to October and because the alpine plant does not produce runners that are typical of other strawberry varieties, it doesn’t spread out making it suitable for compact gardening such as container gardening or small garden spaces like kitchen gardens. They make wonderful hedges and decorative landscape plants too.

Alpine strawberries are best grown using alpine strawberry plants on sale from various nurseries, since growing them from seed stage is often difficult and tricky for the home gardener.

Here are some alpine strawberry plants for sale from a reputable supplier that will thrive for many years:

An Introduction to the White Alpine Strawberry

Strawberries are often said to be America’s favorite fruit, which is interesting, because technically they aren’t a fruit. Unlike true fruit, their seeds grow on the outside, whereas real strawberry fruit’s seeds, are always on the inside. Old timers called them the “inside out fruit.”

Strawberry Plants Care: Tips on How to Take Good Care of Your Strawberry Plants

If you want your strawberry plants to thrive and produce a bountiful crop of luscious fruit of fresh strawberries and avoid disease and a poor harvest, here is some tips on how to take care of your strawberry plants.

Strawberry Plants Care: Lots of Good Sunlight

Strawberry plants need lost of sunlight so don’t grow them in a poorly lit area where they can’t get access to good sunlight. Strawberry plants need at least 6 hours of good sunlight everyday so keep that in mind when choosing a piece of land where to plant them or where to position your strawberry pots. If you live in colder climates, then your plants need about 8-10 hours of sunshine so keep that in mind when planting. Certain varieties of Strawberry plants grow better in different climatic regions – for example the everbearing strawberry plant does well in colder regions.

Strawberry Plants Care: Rich Organic Soil

Another step in taking care of your strawberry plants is planting them in rich organic soil. Whether you choose to grow your strawberry plants in pots, a raised bed or in the ground, make sure to prepare the soil by adding a good amount of compost to it. At least 3 inches or so in the top layers of the soil is a good start. Also make sure to clear any weeds, leaves and sticks from the soil first.

=>Soil you want to avoid: It’s best not to plant strawberries in soil where you or someone else previously grew these plants: potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, blueberries, raspberries etc. This is because your strawberry plants are very susceptible to a wilt disease called Verticillium Wilt and these other plants infect the soil with the disease.

On the other hand there are actually some good plants that actually help strawberries: for example onions, marigolds and sage help stop certain diseases and pests from attacking your strawberry patch.

Strawberry Plants Care: Spacing and Mulching

Strawberry plants need space to grow because they grow outwards, so when you plant them in your yard, plant each strawberry plant  30 cm away from the next one so it has lots of space to grow without entangling itself with other surrounding plants. You also want to mulch which simply means spreading dry straw around each plant so that the roots are protected from too much heat and stay cool and also to prevent your ripe strawberry fruits from coming into contact with the soil. Mulching also keeps weeds from growing too much in your strawberry patch.

Strawberry Plants Care: Good Drainage

A very important step in taking care of your strawberry plants is to make sure they are planted in an area with excellent drainage. If the drainage is poor and the soil is clogged with too much moisture, your strawberry plants will rot and the roots will become saturated with too much water making it impossible for them to grow. To ensure proper drainage, you should avoid planting strawberries in soil that is prone to clogging such as black cotton soil. You can also use raised beds which are simply gardens that are built above the ground using brick or wood as the frame that you then fill with soil. Here is an excellent and short 4 minute video that shows you how to build a simple raised garden out of wood:

If you choose to plant your strawberry plants in pots then make sure the pot you choose has holes at the bottom to allow for good drainage. One of the best strawberry pots is the Akro-Mils Stack-A-Pot

Strawberry Plants Care: Slightly Acidic Soil

Another tip on how to take care of your strawberry plants is to make sure they are planted in acidic soil since this is the environment that they really thrive in. The pH should be between 5.5 to 6.5. To test your soil, you can use a pH soil tester that retails for as little as $3.16 – here are a few good ones that won’t drain your bank account.

Strawberry Plants Care: Best Harvesting Practices

Harvesting your strawberries is one of the most rewarding feelings for the home gardener. Your hard work and attentive patience has paid off and now you can reap the reward of your labor.

About 30 days after your strawberry plants flower, your berries should be ripe for picking. Expert strawberry farmers say that one should pluck a few flowers every week to help your strawberry plant to get stronger and produce a better crop of strawberries.

Be careful as you go about picking your fresh strawberry as they will be soft to touch and can easily be bruised. If you spot any rotten ones, pick them and toss them into the garbage so that the rot doesn’t spread to other berries. You can pick the strawberries in two ways- with the stem attached or without it. There is no better method- it all depends on how soon you want to use your strawberries: if you want to use them right away in a day or two, then pick them without the stems and only wash them JUST BEFORE you are ready to eat them or use them in a recipe or else they will turn to mush. If on the other hand you don’t have an immediate need for the  berries , pick them with the stems attached and they should keep fresh for more days.

I found a very helpful resource on how to grow strawberries from OnTheGreenFarms.com. Its a small 5-acre family run farm and they grow organic strawberries and you can find alot of in-depth details about how to grow strawberries from them.
