3 Types of Strawberry Plants
Garden supply stores offer3 main varieties of strawberry plants for sale to the home gardener:
- June Bearing
- Everbearing
- Day Neutral
Each type has its advantages and disadvantages and is best suited for different conditions.
1.JUNE BEARING STRAWBERRY PLANTS
If you prefer one large crop of strawberries, then you want to buy June Bearing strawberry plants. Commercial farmers like them too because they produce the largest yield per season compared to the other types and they harvest just once.
This variety produces a single crop in spring or June (hence the name) and has the largest berries of all the varieties. The plant bears its fruit for about 2-3 weeks at most so you will need to be prepared to harvest at this time.
June Bearing plants come in various classes: Early, Mid-season and Late, depending on the specific time when they will bear fruit in the spring season.
June bearing plants produce lots of runners/daughters so they are best if you have lots of space in your garden so the runners can run free. Runners are like off-shots from the plant, commonly known as “daughters” because they can become a separate plant in themselves.

2. EVERBEARING STRAWBERRY PLANTS
If you want to get more than one crop of strawberries, then you should buy the everbearing strawberry plant.
You will get 2-3 harvests from the everbearing plants – in June, in the late summer or in the early fall.
You will harvest smaller strawberries but the plant is more manageable because it doesn’t produce many runners.
If you have limited space to plant your strawberries like in a strawberry pot , then the everbearing plant is a good choice.
Because of the two to three harvest seasons, the everbearing’s strawberry production is dependent on the number of daylight hours in your location.

3. DAY NEUTRAL STRAWBERRY PLANTS
If you want to harvest strawberries all summer long, then day neutrals are perfect for this.
They can produce fruit throughout the growing season, so if you have a green thumb and the patience, this plant is ideal.
Just like the Everbearings, the day neutrals produce a smaller fruit and because they don’t generate a lot of runners/daughters, they are great if you don’t have a lot of space.
